The NAU Community Music and Dance Academy is delighted to present an exciting new program, Percussion Discovery, for percussion students in the Flagstaff community. This monthly class will enthrall any student who has an interest in or curiosity about the study of percussion.
The Percussion Discovery program is a monthly adventure for 5th-10th graders into the world of percussion instruments – fantastic sounds and related performance techniques. Dozens of instruments will be surveyed, sparking imagination and inspiring inquiry and investigation. From the mysterious screeches of the waterphone to the magnificent thunder of orchestral timpani, the focus is percussively rich and diverse. From Ghana to Trinidad, Rio de Janeiro to Havana, students will explore an amazing cross-section of rhythms and sounds from around the world.
Central to this program is the challenging examination of the standard percussion instruments connected to scholastic bands and orchestras, where students will be guided in personal discovery, advanced musical knowledge, and refinement technique.
