Art Education (extended major) The Art Education Department prepares students to become highly qualified professionals to serve and lead K-12 art programs of excellence. Curriculum in art education focuses upon a comprehensive approach which includes the theory and practice of art criticism, history, aesthetics, and studio. Our program leads to a Bachelor of Science in Education with K-12 art endorsement. Masters students in education and teachers in the field are also eligible for K-12 endorsement.
Ceramics
You have the opportunity to learn ceramics in a program that is known
nationally and internationally for the quality instruction and artwork
produced in that area. The excellent ceramics facility is home to
one of the three Tozan wood kiln sites in the world. You will be exposed
to all ceramic techniques and firing processes and interact regularly
with artists from around the world through a visiting artists program.
Interior Design (extended major) NAU's interior design program provides a wide range of educational opportunities based on an integrated approach to aesthetic, professional, and academic disciplines.
Jewelry and Metalsmithing The Jewelry/Metalsmithing program has an excellent reputation for the quality of instruction and success of it's graduates. The studio facility is one of the best equipped in the southwest. his program is supplemented with nationally and internationally known jewelers and metalsmiths brought in yearly to give workshops and lectures. A student organization, The Jewelers Guild, provides professional experience to all majors in thisarea.
Painting Painting classes range from Painting Fundamentals to Concepts I and II - Watercolor to Figure Painting. In the first two semesters, you will be introduced to materials, methods and techniques in oils. You will learn the basics of canvas stretching, paint mixing, glazing and varnishing, proportions, light and shadow. In the final two years you will be encouraged to develop your own style and direction while developing an understanding of composition and color theory.
Printmaking Printmaking is the least known of the art mediums. At Northern Arizona University all of the various print techniques from intaglio to silk-screen and lithography are offered for your educational experience.
Sculpture Exciting, electrifying, stimulating, challenging, thought-provoking - the sculpture program will help you as an NAU student expand your imagination through techniques such as forging, foundry, metal fabrication, carving, woodworking and experimental media. The spacious, well, equipped studios allow for the exploration of an individual creative voice in a well supervised environment.
Studio Art (extended major) Our program educates and prepares you for your career as an active and producing artist. We emphasize the creation of visual objects and the development of artistic vision through direct experience and a variety of media. Completing the degree requires presentation and oral defense of a one-person exhibition under the supervision and with the approval of a faculty committee.
