The Psychology of Julie B. Wells

As a child, my mother supplied me with boxes and boxes of Crayola Crayons - the big, special box with 64 crayons and a sharpener. I fell in love with Periwinkle Blue, and rubbed it’s hue across the picture plane until it became a mere stump. Since those days, I have fallen for so many other rich and rare colors, and I now strategically use them to unify my artwork. I’ve discovered ways to thread dark values and color together to tie multiple pieces of artwork together.

I create images which symbolize and portray my inner thoughts about the realm of the unknown, the mystery of flight, and flying things such as: bats, birds, and moths. The images represent the flight of the supernatural, the soul, and flight upward and beyond the heavens. Creating both representational and non representational art, my work features shadowy tones and mysterious openings. I recently became intrigued with windows and triangular shapes. My series of paintings is entitled “The Psychology of Julie B. Wells,” features the repetition of a triangle of clouds that create an opening to an outside world. The triangle begins as a small shape and increases in size within each painting. I attribute my romance with dark colors to artists from the San Francisco School of Abstract Expressionism and Bay Area Figurative Artists. Artists Joan Brown, David Park, and Nathan Oliveira, continue to challenge and prompt my creative reaction to the power of color and design. I extend a special “thank-you” to Professor Deborah Edgerton for her inspiration and guidance.

Paul FolkA native of Arizona, I grew up in the beautiful town of Scottsdale. After a career as a Scottsdale Police Officer, I moved to Flagstaff and entered into a BFA Studio Art Degree program at Northern Arizona University. During my studies, I gained the skills needed to grow as an artist; learning new techniques and working with diverse art forms. Today, I am drawn to contemporary styles of painting. I enjoy experimenting with new ideas to create unique oil paintings. The intensity of color values and an ability to blend smoothly together has made oil paint my favorite medium. I select my subject matter from southwestern landscapes, and the natural surroundings in Arizona provide me with the motivation to paint. I work from photographs that I take of places like the red rocks of Sedona or the mesas of the Colorado Plateau. Combining realistic organic textures, with surrealistic visions from my imagination, creates an appealing composition. Painting on wood panels, masonite or canvas, I start with a background of geometric shaped mountains, mesas or rocks, highlighted by a sunset, moonlight or storm. The foreground will present interesting tree forms, roots, textured rocks, and other unique vegetation. I also include different angles of light, and use sharp lines to emphasize a clean crisp look. All of these elements combined create a dreamlike painting of an imaginary place. The finished paintings are colorful and well balanced compositions that are fascinating to look at. The stunning scenery throughout the state of Arizona is truly my inspiration. I enjoy studying Surrealist artist Salvador Dali, landscape painter Frederic Church, and Arizona landscape painter Ed Mell. They all have influenced my style. Currently, I have completed a series of surreal southwestern landscapes for my senior exhibition in December 2006.
