Welcome to the Department of English at Northern Arizona University. Students come to our department for many reasons. We have strong graduate degree programs in creative writing, English education, general English studies, applied linguistics, literature, professional writing, technical writing, and TESL. Our undergraduate degree programs in English similarly allow outstanding faculty to mentor students in all the aforementioned subject areas. We encourage you to explore our faculty links, since the subject list above only hints at the expertise of our faculty and the range of our course offerings.
Besides our faculty and their specialties, why do students come to Flagstaff? At 7000 feet, nestled below the majestic San Francisco Peaks, Flagstaff is surrounded by pines and aspens and is close by the Grand Canyon National Park and many national monuments. Recently, Flagstaff ranked second on Men’s Journal’s list of Best Places to Live and 9th on Outside magazine’s list of best college towns for playing outside. Its elevation, clean air, four-season climate, train whistles at night, and numerous coffee shops make Flagstaff a good place for English majors.
If you can’t come to Flagstaff, our department also offers exceptional classes and programs online, so you can still be a part of our department.
Students from all over the world are drawn to the department’s program in Intensive English (PIE), which prepares international students for university success. The Department of English has partnerships and exchanges with universities in Thailand and China, giving our campus the benefit of even greater international diversity.
Thanks for visiting our website. If you have questions, don’t hesitate to e-mail any of our faculty or staff. We hope you will consider studying with our fine faculty, and we look forward to welcoming you to the Department of English.
