Nancy L. Paxton earned her BA degree in English from Cornell University and her MA and Ph.D. in English from Rutgers University. She is author of George Eliot and Herbert Spencer: Feminism, Evolutionism and the Reconstruction of Gender (Princeton, 1991), and Writing under the Raj: Gender, Race, and Rape in the British Colonial Imagination, 1830-1947 (Rutgers 1999). She co-edited a collection of essays entitled, Outside Modernism: In Pursuit of the English Novel, 1900-1930 (Palgrave 2000) with Lynne Hapgood, and has published journal articles on Olive Schreiner, Flora Annie Steel, Maud Diver, Rudyard Kipling, Rebecca West, and Virginia Woolf. She has held postdoctoral fellowships at Harvard University, at the Bunting Institute at Radcliffe College, and the Davis Humanities Center. She regularly teaches undergraduate and graduate classes on nineteenth- and twentieth-century British literature, women's writing in English, colonial and post-colonial Anglo-phone literatures, and feminist and queer theory. She is currently working on a comparative study of censorship which will be called Books Travel: Literary Censorship in the Global Marketplace of the 1920s.
