The MA in English--General English Studies emphasis allows students to shape a program to suit their own goals. Our students include working professionals, K-12 teachers, community college adjunct faculty, students preparing for a Ph.D. program, and life-long learners. Students can take courses in literature, professional writing and technology, literacy, composition, English Education, linguistics, and second-language teaching. Students often focus their elective coursework in a particular area in order to combine the master's degree with one of the English Department's certificate programs such as the Professional Writing Certificate or the TESOL Certificate.
The General English Studies emphasis is available as a distance learning degree via the web, as a statewide degree, and a Flagstaff mountain campus degree. Students in the greater Phoenix area, Yuma, and other state locations have the opportunity to take web classes as well as in-person or IITV courses. This master's degree is a thirty-six hour program, including 12-15 hours of required courses and 21-24 hours of electives chosen in conference with an advisor.
