Admission to the PhD program is open to students who have a master's degree in linguistics, applied linguistics, or a related area. The deadline for applications is February 15th for the following fall semester, which begins in late August.
Applying to the Program
There are two major steps required to apply to the PhD program in Applied Linguistics:
1) Submit an application for graduate study to the Graduate College
You can find information about the application for graduate study at the graduate college website or by calling the
graduate college at (928) 523-4348.
To complete an application online, go to:

The graduate college application should include:
• recent GRE scores for the general test taken within the last 5 years
• for non-native English speakers: official TOEFL scores taken within
the last two years. A minimum score of 100 iBT, 250 CBT, or 600 paper-based
is required for admission.
2) Submit the following materials to the Applied Linguistics Program:
• a curriculum vitae that describes your educational background, employment
history, and professional activities
• a statement of purpose that describes why you are interested in obtaining
a PhD from NAU, what research focus you anticipate pursuing, and how you
ultimately intend to use your degree
• 3 letters of recommendation from people who can attest to your ability
and potential for doctoral level work
• 1–2 sample publications or manuscripts. Manuscripts from presentations
or term papers from graduate courses are acceptable.
