This program of study covers a blend of theoretical and practical issues, ranging from linguistics to ESL methodology; in addition, students have the opportunity for a one-semester supervised teaching experience. Other central courses include Assessment for Second Language Skills, Second Language Acquisition, and Sociolinguistics. The Applied Linguistics Track differs from the other two tracks by requiring Research Methods in Applied Linguistics (ENG 668) and Second Language Acquisition (ENG 658). MA students in the Applied Linguistics emphasis take four electives, two of which must be graduate TESL/applied linguistics courses. One goal of this track is to prepare students for PhD level study in applied linguistics.
