This program of study is designed for practicing teachers who have earned or will earn teacher certification by the time they have completed the MA-TESL degree. The MA-TESL practicing teacher track offers a blend of theoretical and practical courses, ranging from linguistics to ESL methods and materials.
Other central courses include assessment for second language skills, fundamentals of second language teaching, and grammatical foundations. The MA-TESL practicing teacher track differs from the other two MA TESL tracks by offering teachers a capstone experience during which they can engage in a supervised classroom-based research project in their own classrooms, in place of taking the comprehensive exam. These teachers also earn practicum credit in the confines of their own classrooms.
Arizona ESL endorsement: This program includes all the courses requirements for the Arizona ESL endorsement. In addition, the Arizona Department of Education requires properly documented second language learning experience. This requirement may be met in several ways including:
- Six semester hours of study of a foreign language
- Passing the Spanish proficiency exam
- Tribal documentation of proficiency in a Native Language.
Please look at the academic catalog for more information on specific courses.
