Teaching and Research Interests:
Sanjam Ahluwalia received her doctoral degree in History with a graduate certificate in Women’s Studies from the University of Cincinnati in December 2000. As a joint appointment in WGS and Department of History, she has regularly taught graduate and under-graduate courses in both her academic units. Her teaching areas include feminist theories–with a focus on “women of color,” histories of women and gender, world history in the modern period, politics and histories of nationalism, colonialism and gender. She has recently published her work on the history of birth control in colonial India. The book Reproductive Restraints: Birth Control in India, 1877-1947, has been co-published by University of Illinois Press and Permanent Black Press, New Delhi. She is currently working on completing a co-authored article with Professor Sheryl Lutjens, on women of color scholarship. Besides this she is also researching two other larger projects: History of Sexology in India; Histories of Traffic and Prostitution in Colonial and Post-Colonial India.
