welcome

In our department (formerly the Department of Humanities, Arts, and Religion), we offer an integrative approach to the study of human culture in its diversity and interconnections.  The comparative analysis of artistic, literary and religious traditions provides insights into how different societies identify and organize meaningful human relationships and projects, and how innovations arise and are assessed within traditions of discourse and interpretation.  It also enables students to understand the practices of human interaction, communication, and representation into which people are acculturated and within which they work to shape the world.

In CCS, students study art, film, history, literature, philosophical and religious traditions, intellectual history, and cultural theory.  We value experiential learning and provide opportunities for a wide variety of internships at local, regional and national institutions.  In addition, studying abroad is encouraged—you can study for a summer, a semester, during your spring break or for the academic year and still graduate in four years.

CCS courses pay close attention to critical reading and oral and written communication skills, providing strong preparation for graduate study in the arts, humanities, and social sciences.  In addition, students will be prepared for a wide variety of careers:   in museums, centers and other cultural institutions; in government service and non-governmental organizations; in publishing and information media; in education, law and private and public sector administration; in planning and policy development; in creative arts and arts management; and in international business.
