Art History

The art history program offers students the opportunity to explore the art of Western Europe, the United States, Asia and the indigenous cultures of the Americas and the Pacific Rim. Our majors learn formal analysis, iconology and historic themes - the "what" that we want to know when we look at a work of art. We also examine the cultural contexts from which the art emerges - the "why" that lies behind the object. In addition, the program encourages interdisciplinary work - go ahead, take Picasso's Guernica and create an interpretive dance!

Art History majors leave the program with a solid grounding in the discipline and an ability to express themselves in clear and insightful language. A degree in art history prepares students for graduate work in many fields such as teaching, art criticism and arts administration, and for professions in museums, galleries or auction houses. The skills of critical reading and thoughtful writing that we foster can translate to careers as diverse as law, diplomatic service, objects conservation and government support for the arts.
