Master of Arts in Sustainable Communities

Visions of Good and Sustainable Communities

The Master of Arts in Sustainable Communities (SUS) program at NAU is designed for those who seek a broad and integrated perspective on the complex issues of contemporary society. Begun in 1996 as the Master of Liberal Studies (MLS) program, it was one of the first of its kind to organize the broad field of liberal studies around issues of sustainability and community life.

SUS is an interdisciplinary program that enables students to create their own course of study to address their intellectual, ethical and practical concerns. All seek to learn how to better their communities and the world in unique and achievable ways. (more...)

To contact the SUS Program, please contact Program Coordinator Tamara Ramirez by email or at (928) 523-0499. Dr. Marcus Ford is the Acting Director of the SUS Program in Dr. Lubarsky's absence.

“Northern Arizona University's [SUS] program, guided by the theme, ‘Visions of Good and Sustainable Societies,’ is one of the most well-implemented programs in the country. The program effectively integrates contemporary issues that are pertinent to today's society and environment. It's easy to see that it has become a model for every MLS program in the U.S., Canada and other regions where graduate liberal studies are developed.”

— Dr. Richard Guzman, past President, Association of Graduate Liberal Studies Programs
