Julie Hedges Brown graduated in 2000 with the Ph.D. in musicology from Yale University.  Her research emphasizes nineteenth-century music, especially the history, biography, reception, and analysis of Robert Schumann and his music.

Her publications have appeared in the Journal of the American Musicological Society (Fall 2004) and 19th Century Music (Spring 2005), and her essay "Schumann and the style hongrois" is forthcoming in the book Rethinking Schumann (Oxford University Press, 2009). She has also presented papers at numerous regional, national, and international conferences. A recipient of a Leylan Dissertation Fellowship, Ms. Hedges Brown has also received Mellon Grants for language study and research, along with an intramural research grant from NAU.

At Yale University she was both an instructor and teaching assistant, and she has since held appointments at Tufts University (2000-2001), Case Western Reserve University (2002-2003), and the Oberlin Conservatory of Music (Fall 2001, 2004-2007). Ms. Hedges Brown has taught a variety of courses, including ones on Baroque topics, nineteenth-century music, symphonic music, music in fin-de-siecle Vienna and Paris, and women and music.
