Alexander Lapins teaches applied tuba and euphonium, coaches chamber music, and
is a member of the Elden Brass Quintet at Northern Arizona University.
Also an instructor at the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, Dr. Lapins has
previously taught at the University of Indianapolis, Indiana State
University, Indiana University, University of Michigan All-State Program
at Interlochen, Detroit Symphony Civic Orchestra, and French Woods
Fine Arts Camp.
Formerly principal tubist of the Lafayette and Terre Haute symphony orchestras and the Columbus (Indiana) Philharmonic, Dr. Lapins was a first-call studio musician in Indianapolis and performed frequently with both the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra and the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. Dr. Lapins has held fellowships at the Tanglewood Music Center and the Henry Mancini Institute, as well as performing with AIMS in Graz, Austria, the Trujillo and Rome festivals, the Disney Collegiate All-Star Band, the New Sousa Band, the Guy Lombardo Orchestra, Harvey Phillips’ Tubacompany, and the Charleston, Chicago, and Cincinnati symphony orchestras. Dr. Lapins has performed in China, Peru, Austria, Italy, and throughout the United States under the batons of such conductors as Mario Venzago, Jack Everly, Erich Kunzel, James Levine, Seiji Ozawa, Quincy Jones, Kurt Masur, Christoph von Dohnányi, Robert Spano, Bobby McFerrin, James Kirchenbauer, Alan Silvestri, and John Williams.
His primary teachers have been Daniel Perantoni, Fritz Kaenzig, Kevin Stees, Tony Kniffen, and Mike Bunn.
Dr. Lapins recently completed his doctoral degree in tuba performance at Indiana University, where he was teaching assistant to renowned pedagogue Daniel Perantoni. He also holds an M.M. in music performance from the University of Michigan and a B.M. in music industry from James Madison University.
