Doctor of Musical Arts: University of Oregon, 1988

Tim Smith's research interests include music theory pedagogy and the music of J. S. Bach. In 2003 he and David Korevaar (University of Colorado, Boulder) won MERLOT's Editor's Choice award for The Fugues of the Well-Tempered Clavier.

In 2006-07 Dr. Smith received funding from the Hinkle Charitable Foundation for creation of the BinAural Collaborative Hypertext. The "B.A.C.H." project provides tools that others can use to create interactive hypermedia on the Web. The project demonstrates the utility of these tools in a commissioned recording of Bach's Goldberg Variations (David Korevaar performing).

The Gail Boyd de Stwolinski Center for Music Theory Pedagogy (the University of Oklahoma) has appointed Dr. Smith as editor (2005-2010) of the Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy. In addition to having served on the College Music Society's Music Theory Advisory Committee, Dr. Smith was associate editor for volume 41 of the College Music Symposium. Other research and creative writing have appeared in: the Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy, Quarterly Journal of the Riemenschneider Bach Institute, 18th Century a Current Bibliography, The Hymn, American String Teacher, Choral Journal, Journal of Church Music, Music Educator's Journal, Bulletin of the CRME, Christian Scholar's Review, Lyrica and the Proceedings of the World Conference on Educational Media and Hypermedia and International Technological Directions in Music Education.

Dr. Smith has read papers at numerous conferences including: the International Conference of the CMS in Vienna, World Conference in Educational Media and Hypermedia, International Conference on Technological Directions in Music Education, Lyrica Society, College Music Society, Association for Technology in Music Instruction, Society for Music Theory, Music Theory Midwest, Music Theory Southeast and Rocky Mountain Society for Music Theory.
