NAU theatre awards several scholarships and theatre activity tuition waivers each year to qualified theatre majors. If you do not intend to be a theatre major in the semester for which you are applying, then you will NOT qualify for a theatre division award. The value of these scholarships and waivers vary from a $100 cash award a semester to a full year’s tuition.
In return, the scholarship/waiver recipient will be required to participate in an assigned activity in the theatre area.
As a general rule, incoming freshmen are not given full or partial tuition waivers. These are given primarily to talented continuing students who have proven themselves on stage, in the shops, and/or in the class room. We do designate some activity waivers for the recruitment of outstanding high school seniors interested in coming to NAU. There are a few individual donor scholarship awards as well that are open to any qualified student who wishes to apply. All awards given to incoming freshmen and transfer students will be subject to review at the end of the first semester to insure compliance with the scholarship contract. Failure to comply with the contract will result in the loss of the second semester award. Continuing applicants are usually given full academic year awards unless a probationary condition exists. The application deadline is in March each year and must be submitted no later than the announced scholarship/waiver audition dates.
The department has a number of in- and out-of-state activity waivers that are full to partial tuition waivers for students. Application for waivers must be made to the theatre scholarship coordinator or through the chairman by a published deadline each semester. Activity waivers carry with them an obligation of “activity” in return for the award, typically enrollment in a TH113/213/313 course each semester. Your advisor can give you more information.
The program also has a number of donor-type scholarships available. Some of them are quite significant. Scholarship applications must be made each year at an established time - in most years they are held immediately following spring break. Scholarships and waivers require an audition or interview.
Activity waivers and scholarships must be applied for annually and do not have to be based on financial need.
In addition to these awards, the department hires work-study students and offers a small number of theatre assistantships each semester. See the department chair for details.
